Dog-friendly Yarra Valley wineries

11 cellar doors, all sourced · updated

The 10-second version

  • Tasting rooms and restaurants are usually off limits (assistance animals excepted).
  • Dog spots are often limited and weather dependent: book and mention your dog.

Check with the venue before you go. Policies change, areas get booked for functions, and covered areas may close to dogs when blinds or roofs are shut.

The rule: can dogs go inside a Victorian pub?

Not where food is handled or served, under the rules in force as of 22 October 2026. A venue may allow pet dogs in an outdoor dining area that isn't enclosed: not substantially closed by a roof plus walls or windows, even temporarily (think café blinds and a closed retractable roof), and reachable without walking through an enclosed area. Assistance animals must be allowed in all customer areas. Councils enforce this, often only after a complaint.

Why trust this list?

  • Every place links its source: the venue's own site, a council page or a named guide.
  • “Venue says so” only when the venue itself states the policy. Everything else is labelled “Reported by guides”.
  • Dated. Each card shows when we checked. We aim to re-check every place within 120 days.
  • Not paid for by venues. Any partner links are labelled, with the commission disclosed.
  • We don't guess. If nobody says, it's “Not stated”. If sources clash, it's “Sources disagree”.

How we check

A long lunch in the Yarra Valley doesn't have to mean booking the dog sitter. This list covers eleven cellar doors between Wonga Park, Coldstream, Gruyere, Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek where dogs are welcome, about an hour's drive east of the Melbourne CBD, and spells out exactly where your dog can sit, because "dog friendly" at a winery almost never means the tasting room.

What we found when we read each winery's own page:

  • Dogs stay outside. Lawns (Yarrawood), terraces (Coombe), a piazza (SOUMAH) or a dedicated dog corner (Tokar, Kellybrook). Restaurants and indoor tasting rooms are off limits for pet dogs; assistance animals are the exception.
  • Dog spots are small and fill up. Kellybrook's dog area seats four people at two barrels and has no roof. Book, say you're bringing a dog, and have a rain plan.
  • Vineyards themselves are usually out of bounds. Kellybrook, for one, keeps visitors off its vines because of the phylloxera risk, so don't plan a walk through the rows.

Venue says so means the winery's own site says dogs are welcome and where. Reported by guides means we only found it in a directory, usually PawScapes, so call ahead. Not stated means the winery says "dog friendly" without naming an area. Two wineries you'll see on other lists aren't here yet: Punt Road's FAQ has a blank where its dog policy should be, and Helen & Joey's FAQ only says pets can't stay in its hotel rooms. Planning a weekend rather than a day trip? Many of these sit close to Visit Yarra Valley's dog-friendly list, which also covers off-leash parks in the area.

We only list cellar doors with a source: the venue's own website, a reputable guide such as Time Out, Urban List or Broadsheet, or a dog-venue directory. “Venue says so” means the venue's own site states the policy. Everything else stays “Reported by guides” until a venue confirms it. Missing one? Suggest it, with a link if you can.
