Check with the venue before you go. Policies change, areas get booked for functions, and covered areas may close to dogs when blinds or roofs are shut.
The rule: can dogs go inside a NSW pub?
Not where food is served or eaten, under the rules in force as of 23 October 2026. Under the NSW Companion Animals Act (s14A) and the Food Standards Code, a venue may allow a pet dog in an outdoor dining area that isn't enclosed (roof plus walls or windows, even temporarily, such as blinds down), as long as the dog is on a lead, kept on the ground and not fed. Assistance animals must be allowed in customer areas. Councils enforce this.

Why trust this list?
- Every place links its source: the venue's own site, a council page or a named guide.
- “Venue says so” only when the venue itself states the policy. Everything else is labelled “Reported by guides”.
- Dated. Each card shows when we checked. We aim to re-check every place within 120 days.
- Not paid for by venues. Any partner links are labelled, with the commission disclosed.
- We don't guess. If nobody says, it's “Not stated”. If sources clash, it's “Sources disagree”.
How we check
Taking your dog to the pub in Sydney usually means the beer garden, courtyard or outdoor tables. Under the NSW Companion Animals Act (section 14A) and the national Food Standards Code, a pet dog may join you in an outdoor dining area that isn't enclosed by a roof and walls, if the venue agrees, it's on a lead and it stays on the ground. Indoors where food is served or eaten, only assistance animals have a right of entry. Our NSW law explainer has the detail.
Every pub on this page passed two checks on 23 October 2026: the pub's own website says dogs are welcome, and at least one independent guide or directory agrees. We dropped venues we couldn't confirm both ways, places closed for renovation, and venues whose sources contradict each other.
Each listing answers two questions:
- Outside: does the pub say on its own site where dogs can sit (Venue says so), or is the area only named by a guide (Reported by guides)?
- Inside: does the pub say dogs stay outside (Venue says outside only), or does it say dogs are welcome inside? We show those in amber: some well-loved Sydney pubs welcome dogs indoors, but that's the pub's call against a strict reading of the rules, and councils can and do enforce. Check with staff.
We also give each pub a confidence label. High means the pub names the area and an editorial guide agrees. Medium means the pub didn't say where, or the only second source is a directory.
Heading to the sand instead? See Sydney dog beaches and off-leash rules. In Melbourne? Here are the dog-friendly pubs in Melbourne.
We only list pubs with a source: the venue's own website, a reputable guide such as Time Out, Urban List or Broadsheet, or a dog-venue directory. “Venue says so” means the venue's own site states the policy. Everything else stays “Reported by guides” until a venue confirms it. Missing one? Suggest it, with a link if you can.
